Smith excited about Blue Tigers'
25-player football recruiting class

Feb. 6, 2019

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. --- Wednesday was like Christmas morning for college football coaches ... Christmas morning when you're 8, no less.

Time to unwrap the presents, even though you already know what's inside.

"It's a very exciting day, very exciting," Lincoln coach Steve Smith said after the Blue Tigers landed a football recruiting class of 25 players. "I thought the day went really well, because we got everybody we wanted.

"It came out really good for us with what we were trying to get done."

While 14 of the 25 play defense, that wasn't necessarily the plan at the start of this process.

"It just worked out that way," said Smith, 41, who's entering his third season with the Blue Tigers. "Our biggest emphasis was making sure we got some better pass rushers, and we did that."

Here's the breakdown of recruits, by position:

OFFENSE (9): QB 1, RB, 1, WR 4, OL 3

DEFENSE: (14) DL 5, LB 5, DB 4.

SPECIAL TEAMS (2); Punter 1, Long snapper 1.

The gem of this class might be Charles Ransom, a 6-1, 300-pound defensive lineman and JUCO transfer from Hudson Valley in Troy, N.Y.

"He had a bunch of D-I offers," Smith said, "but he couldn't quite get past the grade-point averages that he needed to have. So that's a big, big addition to our defensive line.

"I'm excited to see him step on the field and play in the MIAA."

Another key came at linebacker with the need to replace the graduating Edwin Durassaint, who led the team in tackles (104), quarterback hurries (12) and interceptions (two) last season.

The leader of that group looks to be 6-foot, 220-pound Collin Nichols, a senior at Troy High School, while Eldon's Dawson Brandt (6-0, 190) could also be a factor.

Other players who could make an immediate impact this fall, Smith said, include three offensive linemen: Calvin Black (6-5, 300), Tyrese Davis (6-9, 350) and Javon Burress (6-6, 340), who's the nephew of a starting guard for the Kansas City Chiefs, Jeff Allen.

"Those three guys will definitely make a big impact with what we're trying to get done," Smith said.

"Overall, we got the pieces that we needed and that was important. Now it's about developing them and getting everybody right."

The Blue Tigers went 3-8 last fall, falling just short of the program's first four-win season since 2003. The highlight of the season may have been Lincoln's 23-14 win at William Jewell, which was its first conference road win since 1975.

1975. Believe it, or not.

There were three or four other games the Blue Tigers could have --- if not should have --- won.

"We're going to spend a lot of time this spring on our football intelligence," Smith said, "and about winning those games we had a chance to win just because we didn't make smart decisions, at times. We have to make our players understand that they have to make the right decisions at the right times.

"But they're doing a great job in the weight room and running in the morning," he continued. "Now, it's just about getting through the spring (practices are March 19-April 13), keeping everybody healthy, getting into our summer conditioning and being ready to report on Aug. 8."

Below is some general information on each signee along with thoughts from Smith and his staff.
